About the Emirate

Ras Al Khaimah is the smallest of the 7 emirates, located in the northeast of the UAE, and covering an area of almost 2,500 sq. km. The region is located on the coast of the Arabian Gulf and borders Oman. The emirate is divided into 2 almost equal parts, one of which is located along the coast, and the other in sparsely populated mountainous areas. The capital is the eponymous city of Ras Al Khaimah, where most of the population lives.

The name of the region literally translates as "cape of small huts," because there were previously many fishing villages here. Initially, the emirate was part of Sharjah and separated only in 1909. Ras Al Khaimah was the last to join the rest of the country: Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi signed the corresponding agreement in 1972. Historically, the region was engaged in fishing, livestock breeding, and agriculture due to the milder climate, as well as in the extraction and export of pearls.

The capital is divided into two parts by a bay: Old Ras Al Khaimah, where the main attractions of the emirate are located, and Nakheel, where the Ras Al Khaimah International Airport is located.

The region is characterized by a unique landscape where plains mix with the picturesque Hajjar Mountains (Jibal Al Hajjar). It also attracts visitors with its lush greenery, a 64-kilometer coastline, white sandy beaches, bays, lagoons, mangrove thickets, and its terracotta dunes, which makes tourism highly developed in Ras Al Khaimah.

Transportation accessibility and infrastructure

Transportation between different areas in the emirate is highly developed, but within the capital it is best to travel by car or taxi. It takes an hour to get to Sharjah and Ajman, 1 hour 20 minutes to Dubai, and 2 hours 20 minutes to Abu Dhabi.

18 km from the capital is the Ras Al Khaimah International Airport, with two passenger terminals for international and domestic flights. Water transportation is coordinated by the Al Jazeera Port and Saqr Port.

  • Flamingo Beach - A sandy beach ideal for families with children as the water is shallow and there are no strong currents. Nearby are mangroves where a population of pink flamingos reside.
  • Dhayah Fort - A fort that served as protection during the defense against the British in the 19th century. Today, it has been turned into a large tourist centre with a village that reconstructs the lifestyle of the people during that period, and the ancient burial sites of the Umm Al Nar civilization.

Among the popular shopping areas and leisure spots are Al Hamra Mall and Manar Mall, Khatts Springs thermal springs, and Iceland Water Park, which is the largest in the UAE, as well as the Al Hamra Marina & Yacht Club.
